Barbara’s Bramble Cocktail

This is a very popular cocktail in the UK and the story goes that it was created as an answer to the American Cosmopolitan. It is a refreshing combination of gin, lemon juice, sugar and Crème de Mûre, a blackberry liqueur. The original recipe, as Barbara gave it to me, calls for the ingredients to be shaken and served over crushed ice. The crushed ice looks good and dilutes the drink as it is sipped, however, not many French households, including mine, have a refrigerator with an ice machine, much less, one that that produces it crushed and bashing ice in a kitchen towel just makes a mess. Instead, I shake the ingredients with ice, pour the mix into a glass and top up with chilled soda water!
